THIS EPISODE

This episode we’re talking about something that’s been bothering a lot of us lately. That is, the topic of Facebook and Google vs the government and major news outlets. If you haven’t heard lately, there was a standoff between Google and the Australian government (to which Google seems to have eventually backed down), followed by Facebook and the Australian government, to which Facebook didn’t back down, but then sort of did after a while? Are you confused yet? What does this mean, and especially, what does this mean for you guys not only in Australia, but who are listening from around the world?

We speak to Mathew Ingram to discuss these issues.

Other topics discussed include

  • Who’s behind these new regulations popping up everywhere
  • Are news organisations complaining about platforms that give them most of their web traffic?
  • Clubhouse, is it really as stupid as it seems
  • Mathew’s latest article
  • Closed versus open internet

Mathew Ingram is an award-winning journalist who has spent the past two decades writing about business, technology and new media as well as advising media companies on digital strategy. He is currently the chief digital writer for the Columbia Journalism Review, and prior to that he was a senior writer with Fortune magazine, where he wrote about the evolution of media and the Internet. Before joining Fortune, he held a similar position at Gigaom, a leading technology blog network.

This episode, we have an amazing interview with Mat Stillone. Mat is an award-winning Gen Y entrepreneur at the helm of a number of successful companies, including Protein Supplies Australia (PSA), a supplements start-up whose mantra is ‘natural nutrition without the crap’.

Profitable from its first year, PSA has grown into a multi-million dollar business, whose range of health conscious supplements are sold online and in 1500 outlets nationwide. Expansion has been achieved without recourse to partnerships or venture capital investment.

In addition to producing and formulating PSA’s own products, Mat has diversified into manufacturing and developing products for global supermarket giants, specialty retailers and other well known brands, via another start-up venture, Integrity Food Co, posting significant revenue & growth within the first 12 months of business (founded July 2017).

Mat’s ability to diversify saw another business Botanika Blends launch nationally in February 2018 with a focus on plant based nutrition.

In May 2020, Mat launches his latest business “Flexible Foods” which offers plant based meat alternatives and quick and easy vegan meals.

Mat was awarded Business News Australia’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Wholesaling, Manufacturing and Distribution, in 2015, 2016, and 2019. He was shortlisted for the Optus & Telstra Business Awards 2016.

Interviewee

We spoke Konsyg CEO William Gilchrist about this journey from salesman to global CEO in a few short years.

About William

William has accumulated over a decade of experience in technology sales throughout North America and Asia-Pacific. He holds a Bachelors of Arts (B.A.) in International Relations from Bowdoin College, TEFL Certification from GLV Zhuhai / 平和英语学院, Mandarin certification from Cornell University and another Mandarin certification from Beijing University / 北京大学.

William began his career within the corporate sector of Shanghai as a Media Relations Manager for Wai White Dragon, a publication for Shanghai’s elite. William then returned to the United States to work in school administration as Director of Admissions and College Planning at Hales Franciscan High School in Chicago Illinois. He was hired to rebuild the admissions department by devising a plan to increase enrollment numbers among a unique demographic within the Chicago-land area.

After his time at Hales Franciscan, William decided to re-align his initial aspirations of Asia by working in Business Development in Singapore for TSL Marketing, a lead generation marketing firm. At TSL, WIlliam ran multiple lead generation campaigns in both English and Mandarin for top-tier tech firms throughout J-APAC.

He then moved to a position as Regional New Business Sales Manager for Google, Asia-Pacific. William has also founded and facilitated internal sales training courses for multiple departments. William transitioned to the APAC Knowledge Manager role where he focused on training and quality systems management for regional and global projects.
